Livingston County Health Center is sponsoring Pro1gressive Agriculture Safety Day next Thursday, September 19th at the Litton Agri-Science Center.
Chillicothe R-II, Livingston County R-III (Chula), Tina-Avalon, and Bishop Hogan third to fifth grade students will be attending the event to learn more about farm safety.
Recognized as the largest rural safety and health education program for children in North America, Progressive Agriculture Safety Day provides age-appropriate, hands-on educational lessons primarily designed for children ages 4 to 13 years old.
The Safety Day is supported through a Progressive Agriculture Foundation grant, which provides T-shirts for all participants, take-home goodie bags and more.
“Our hope is that the students take away at least one thing that can help keep them safer in their day-to-day lives, and to pass on what they learned to their friends, parents and other loved ones,” said Cathy Ripley, Community Health Worker for the Health Center.
“By providing this safety and education information in a fun, interactive and professional manner, we will increase knowledge of farm related safety issues that can be drawn upon for a lifetime.”
A variety of vendors are participating in this special event including:
Missouri State Highway Patrol will be onsite demonstrating the importance of wearing a seat belt through the use of a roll-over simulator.
University of Missouri Extension will be focusing on dangers surrounding farm equipment and how to keep a safe distance with moving parts through a Power Take-Off demonstration. They also will have a learning station demonstrating dangers surrounding grain bins.
Students will get hands-on experience using a fire extinguisher to put out a fire from the Chillicothe Fire Department.
The Chillicothe Police Department will also be working with the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office to educate about safety issues when home alone and how to be safe when away from home.
Farmers Electric Cooperative will have demonstrations emphasizing the importance of being careful around power lines.
Missouri Farm Bureau will teach about poison look-alike and interactive lessons about how to be aware of moving vehicles through a Blind Spot demonstration.
“We are thrilled to have such a great response from the schools and those who will be presenting learning stations. The Litton Agri-Science Learning Center campus is the ideal venue for Safety Day. We appreciate all the volunteers, presenters, donors and the Chillicothe FFA members providing their time and resources to help make this event possible,” said Ripley.
