Adult Health
Not Just for Kids...
Although many people think of the health center as 'the place where kids get shots,' we actually provide many services to adults as well.

As we grow older, we often take good health for granted and wait for a problem to show up before taking action. It’s important for all adults to not only maintain good health through proper nutrition, exercise and avoiding bad habits, but to identify health concerns and treat them before they become a health risk.

Cholesterol Testing

CHOLESTEROL TESTING
Do you know how your cholesterol numbers measure up? Your numbers are crucial for knowing your chance of having a heart attack.

The health center provides a complete cholesterol test for a cost of $13.00 to cover supplies.  Our test determines total cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, triglycerides and glucose measurements. Please bring exact change or write a check for the cost of the test. It should take around 30 minutes for results to be compiled. Clients must be 18 years old or have written parental consent.
Testing is offered by appointment only, so those interested must call the health center at 646-5506.

For the most accurate measurements, don't eat or drink anything (other than water) for nine to 12 hours before the blood sample is taken.

BLOOD PRESSURE CLINICS
According to recent estimates, one in four U.S. adults has high blood pressure, but because there are no symptoms, nearly one-third of these people don't even know they have it. This is why high blood pressure is often called the "silent killer." (American Heart Association)

Livingston County Health Center holds blood pressure clinics several times each month, and blood pressure readings are available at our offices.  Call the health center at 660-646-5506 to find the most convenient time to have your blood pressure checked.

ADULT IMMUNIZATIONS
Many people are under the impression that immunizations are “just for kids,” but adults need to keep up on their own vaccinations as well. Many new vaccines are available to prevent diseases in adults that were not required when many adults were school aged.

So, which immunizations do you need? It’s best to ask your doctor for
adult immunization recommendations, but you may need a  flu shot each year or a tetanus booster if its been more than ten years since your last vaccination, or more than five years and you have an injury. The health center offers immunizations for adults and children at three regular monthly clinics, on a walk-in basis.  More...

TB Testing
Tuberculosis (TB) Testing
Tuberculosis (TB) is a lung disease caused by a tiny germ breathed into the lungs. The only way to contact the disease is by extremely close contact, through the air, with someone who has the disease. Symptoms of TB may include a cough of longer then three weeks, unexplained weight loss, night sweats, chills, fever, and coughing up blood in advanced cases.

The tuberculin skin test is available at the health center to county residents for a fee of $3.00 to cover supplies.  Please bring exact change or write a check, we don't keep cash on hand.

If you have questions about tuberculosis, call your personal physician, the Livingston County Health Center at 646-5506, or the Missouri Department of Health at 1-800-611-2912.

HOME VISITS
Are you home-bound and in need of skilled nursing services? Livingston County Health Center nurses can provide services such as weekly set-up and monitoring of medications or foot and nail care for diabetics.

We provide care under your doctor’s instruction, so there’s no confusion. Nurses will also educate family members on caring for their relatives. Our goal is to help clients remain healthy and independent in their own homes for as long as possible. Home bound patients must have a physician’s order to receive care in their home from health center nurses.

One of the most common services provided is foot care to diabetics in the form of cutting toenails to prevent injuries and infections. The nurses can provide help to diabetic patients with using equipment, administering insulin, foot care and general management of diabetes.

Nurses also set up medications for patients who are homebound to make following doctor’s orders and taking every prescribed dose of required medications easier for the patient. Those who can still leave their homes can bring their medication to the health center and a nurse will organize it for them.

To learn more about home visits, call the health center at 646-5506 Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
